What Is a Chinese Name?

A Chinese name is built from two parts: a family name (surname, usually one character) followed by a given name (one or two characters). Unlike Western names, every character carries a meaning — so "林黛玉" is not just a sound, it is literally "Purple Jade of the Forest." Chinese names are also chosen with the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) in mind: traditional naming balances the elements of your BaZi birth chart so the name "supports" the missing element.

Some of the most common Chinese names are built from popular characters like 伟 (great), 芳 (fragrant), 明 (bright), 丽 (beautiful), 强 (strong) and 静 (calm) — each with a clear, auspicious meaning. Modern parents increasingly combine classical characters with a balanced element profile. This free generator ranks 480+ curated characters by how well they match your chart's elemental needs, then shows you the meaning and pinyin of each recommendation.

Chinese Names — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chinese name?

A Chinese name normally has a one-character family name followed by a one- or two-character given name. Each character has its own meaning, so the whole name reads like a short, auspicious phrase — for example 静雯 means "calm and elegant."

What does my Chinese name mean?

Every character in your name carries a literal meaning — 伟 means "great," 芳 means "fragrant," 明 means "bright." Our generator shows the meaning and pinyin for every recommended character, so you always know what your name says. Browse 50 name characters and their meanings for a deeper look.

Is the name generator really free?

Yes. Enter a birth date and you receive name recommendations ranked by elemental balance — free, with no account required.

How does it choose names?

It calculates the chart's Five Element balance, identifies the weak element, and ranks curated characters that supply it while meeting meaning and sound criteria.

Do I need the exact birth time?

For a full chart, yes — the hour pillar matters. For a simplified balance check, the date alone gives a partial picture. The tool will tell you which mode you are using.

Does the generator work for non-Chinese families?

Yes. It recommends characters with pinyin and meanings, so families without Chinese background can choose an auspicious, meaningful name.

How a Chinese Name Is Built 取名的次序

A Chinese given name is usually two characters, occasionally one. Each character carries a meaning, a stroke count and an element, and a naming method checks three things in a fixed order.

Element first 五行

Characters are chosen whose elements supply what the birth chart is short of. That decision comes from the birth data, not from taste, which is why two children in the same family often receive characters from different element groups.

Strokes second 筆畫與數理

Stroke counts feed the 五格 framework, which reads the structure of a name much as the number tool reads a number. A combination can look elegant in meaning and still produce a weak structure, and the framework is what catches that.

Sound and sense third 音與義

The name has to be sayable by the people who will use it, and it should not collide with a homophone that mocks, mourns or embarrasses. A name that scores perfectly and sounds wrong fails, which is why the generator shows the reading alongside the characters rather than only the verdict.

Where the zodiac fits

Some modern methods prefer certain radicals for particular birth years and treat those preferences as a first filter. In the classical order they are secondary to element and stroke, so the generator applies them after the first two checks and labels them as such.
