🔥 Period 9 · 九運 (Li Gua / 離宮)

2024 – 2043 · The Fire Cycle · Governed by the Li Trigram ☲

On February 4, 2024, the world entered Flying Star Period 9 (九運) — the final cycle in the 180-year system that divides time into nine 20-year periods, each ruled by one of the nine stars and its corresponding trigram. This is not a small calendar detail. For practitioners of the Flying Star school (玄空飛星), a period change reorders the energetic map of every building on the planet.

This guide explains what Period 9 actually is, how the system works, what the correct Period 9 chart looks like (several popular versions circulating online are wrong — we correct one of them below), and what it means practically for homes, careers, and the wider world.

The System: Three Eras, Nine Periods

The Flying Star system divides time into three great eras (三元) of 60 years each, further divided into nine periods (九運) of 20 years each — 180 years in total. Each period is governed by one of the nine numbers of the Luo Shu (洛書) magic square, and each number carries a star with specific qualities:

PeriodYearsStarElementTheme
11864–18831 WhiteWaterBeginnings, intellect
21884–19032 BlackEarthSickness, mothers
31904–19233 JadeWoodQuarrels, authority
41924–19434 GreenWoodScholarship, romance
51944–19635 YellowEarthDisaster (no fixed palace)
61964–19836 WhiteMetalAuthority, nobility
71984–20037 RedMetalRobbery, eloquence
82004–20238 WhiteEarthWealth, accumulation
92024–20439 PurpleFireVisibility, transformation

Notice the contrast between Period 8 and Period 9. Period 8 was Earth — stable, physical, accumulative: real estate, mining, manufacturing, "brick and mortar." Period 9 is Fire — luminous, fast, and transformative: information, media, energy, and anything that becomes more valuable the more visible it is. The shift from 8 to 9 is the shift from owning things to being seen.

The Li Trigram: What Fire Means

Period 9 is governed by the Li trigram (☲ 離卦) — Fire, light, clarity, the middle daughter, and the direction South. In the Five Element cycle, Fire is the only element that cannot sustain itself; it consumes fuel. That gives Period 9 its distinctive character:

The Period 9 Chart: Correcting a Widely Circulated Error

A common claim online is that "Star 9 flies to the South in Period 9, making South the most auspicious sector." This is a confusion between two different maps, and it matters — a reader who rearranges a home around the wrong chart is acting on bad data.

The confusion arises because in the Luo Shu magic square, the number 9 sits in the South (the Li palace). That is a static, structural map. But a flying star chart is dynamic: in each period, the reigning star moves to the center palace, and the other eight stars fly outward in the fixed Luo Shu sequence. In Period 9, star 9 therefore occupies the center, not the South.

The correct Period 9 chart (9 entering the center, flying forward):

8SE · 8 White (Wealth)
4S · 4 Green (Scholarship)
6SW · 6 White (Authority)
7E · 7 Red (Robbery)
9Center · 9 Purple (Reigning)
2W · 2 Black (Sickness)
3NE · 3 Jade (Quarrel)
5N · 5 Yellow (Disaster)
1NW · 1 White (Prosperity)
An honest caveat. In the Flying Star school, the period chart is only the first layer. Real assessment combines the period chart with the mountain chart and water chart, which depend on the building's facing and sitting directions. That is why no honest practitioner will tell you "the South is lucky for everyone in Period 9" — the useful answer requires a specific property. We show the period chart here for education; our structured analysis tool builds the full chart for a specific home.

Sector-by-Sector Guide (Period Chart)

Center — 9 Purple, the Reigning Star

The period star occupies the center palace, the pivot of the whole chart. In practice, the physical center of a home should be kept clear, bright, and uncluttered — it is the heart of the energetic system for the next twenty years.

Southeast — 8 White, Residual Wealth

Star 8, the reigning star of the previous period, rests here. Its wealth energy is no longer supreme but remains strong — like a fortune made in the last era still yielding returns. Southeast is also a classical wealth direction in many schools.

Enhance with: Earth tones, ceramics, plants (Wood feeds Fire, and the SE is the Wood palace), bright lighting. Keep it active — a frequently used room here is ideal.

South — 4 Green, Scholarship and Romance

The South (the Li palace itself) receives star 4, the classical "Wen Chang" (文昌) star of scholarship and the traditional peach-blossom star of romance. For study, writing, and creative work, this is an excellent sector to activate in Period 9.

Enhance with: A study desk, books, green or red accents, a clean writing surface. Fire element is strong here — keep it purposeful, not chaotic.

Northwest — 1 White, Prosperity and Mentorship

Star 1 (Water) brings clarity, intelligence, and the support of mentors and elders — and in Period 9 the northwest, the palace of the patriarch and of heaven, receives this favorable star. Useful for the head of household's study or office.

Enhance with: Metal elements (Metal generates Water), white or silver accents, a desk facing a clear path of travel.

North — 5 Yellow, the Disaster Star

The most feared star in the system, 5 Yellow (五黃), lands in the North for the period. The classical guidance is to keep this sector still and quiet: no construction, no constant activity, no fire or loud energy.

Remedy: Keep the sector quiet and clean; the traditional remedy is the metal wind chime (six rods) or a Wu Lou gourd. Avoid renovation and digging in this sector during the period.

West — 2 Black, the Sickness Star

Star 2 (二黑) in the West is the second of the two inauspicious stars. Traditional advice targets the health of the residents, especially the matriarch figure in the western palace.

Remedy: Metal elements to drain the Earth star — copper coins, a metal bell, or a Wu Lou. Keep the sector clean and avoid heavy Earth colors.

East, Northeast, Southwest — Manage with Balance

The remaining palaces — 7 Red (robbery, eloquence) in the East, 3 Jade (quarrels) in the Northeast, and 6 White (authority) in the Southwest — are less extreme. Keep these areas tidy and well-used; the 6 White in the Southwest, in particular, is a workable authority star for those in leadership.

Global Trends Under Period 9 Energy

Beyond individual spaces, practitioners read Period 9 as a macro-era. Some patterns that align with the Fire signature are already visible:

How to Work With Period 9, Not Against It

  1. Learn your property's actual chart. Do not rearrange your home around a generic "lucky South." Get the facing direction and build the mountain/water chart — our tool does this in minutes.
  2. Remedy the two inauspicious stars. North (5 Yellow) and West (2 Black) need the classical metal remedies and, above all, stillness.
  3. Activate the 8, 4, and 1 palaces. Southeast (wealth), South (scholarship), and Northwest (mentorship) are your practical power points for the period.
  4. Embrace visibility ethically. Fire rewards authenticity and punishes concealment. Build openly, attribute honestly, and let your work be seen.
  5. Ground the fire. Period 9 intensity burns out the ungrounded. Earth elements, routine, rest, and physical connection keep the fire productive instead of destructive.

Common Misconceptions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Period 9 in Feng Shui?

Period 9 (九運, 2024–2043) is the final 20-year cycle of the 180-year Flying Star system, governed by the number 9 and the Li trigram (Fire). It follows Period 8 (2004–2023, Earth) and emphasizes visibility, transformation, technology, and rapid change.

Where is the most auspicious sector in Period 9?

In the period chart, the reigning star 9 sits in the center palace. For a specific home, the most beneficial sectors depend on the facing direction and the mountain/water chart — a generic "best corner" cannot be given without orientation.

Why is the number 9 associated with the South?

In the Luo Shu magic square, the number 9 sits in the South (Li palace). That is a static structural position. In a Period 9 flying star chart, star 9 moves to the center and the other stars fly per the sequence. The two maps are frequently confused in popular articles.

How do I activate my home for Period 9?

Common practice: strengthen the auspicious palaces (commonly 9, 8, 4, and 1 in your chart), remedy the inauspicious ones (5 Yellow and 2 Black), and keep afflicted sectors still. The specific layout depends on your home's facing direction.
